Recently I have found an alternative solution to this problem which has proved more effective than the more conventional CROS (Contra Routing Of Signals) method.
With the introduction in recent times of Mini Microphones designed to help improve hearing speech in noisy conditions, I have tried this out on a number of my clients with unilateral hearing loss. The results have proved extremely successful
The reason for this is because instead of having only a head worn microphone which when subjected to noisy conditions only adds more confusing signals to the user, the Mini Microphone can be held towards the speaker of interest making it possible to more easily isolate their voice over others. Rather an interesting twist to the phrase “Talk to the hand”
During more quiet periods the microphone can be clipped on the deaf side to bring speech to the aided ear in the conventional way.
In addition to this the other advantages of a roving microphone are opened up to the user namely hearing a person in a car or for hearing TV by placing the microphone in front of the TV etc.
