Dirt Sweat & Gears!

6 US States in and Leon Cox from Hearing Aid Manufacturer, Unitron, is half way through his charity bike ride to raise money for Great Ormond Street’s Audiology Department.

Arriving at a crossroads, Leon had a big decision to make, turn back and return to the Sunkist boardwalks of Santa Monica or carry on towards New York, covering 3000 miles in the process.

When Unitron’s Regional Manager, Leon Cox embarked on his coast-to-coast charity bike ride earlier this month, he didn’t quite realise just how daunting his journey would be. With no support team and only an Ipod for company, Leon has pushed himself to the limits of physical endurance by attempting to cover approximately 150 miles per day during his 5 week journey.

For the most part of his journey Leon has been shadowing Route 66, the famous American highway, and has so far passed through California, Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. With around 60% of his journey complete Leon is hoping to cross the finish line in New York City within the next 2 weeks.

Cycling in scorching temperatures of up to 40C, Leon who has been training for the task for the past 6 months has been faced with some tough challenges, and with such an ambitious schedule, thing haven’t always gone to plan. On his travels Leon has had to deal with punctured tyres, vicious dogs, aggressive drivers and saddle sores, yet the 29-year-old, who is hoping to raise £5,000 for Great Ormond Street Hospital’s Audiology Department, says he has experienced some of the world’s most spectacular scenery including rolling deserts and breathtaking mountains.

Talking to Leon via Skype, he said: “Morale has been pretty low at times, especially when my bike has broken or I’ve gotten lost, but my spirits have been uplifted by the hospitality of the American people, the beautiful landscape around me and also the support I have received from back home.

I know what I am doing is a little crazy but it’s in aide of an amazing charity. Once I have recovered then I know I will look back and be pretty humbled that I managed to complete such an amazing challenge.”

Leon maintains that support not only comes in the form of financial aid, but by also by spreading awareness.
